Multiplayer often seems to be what delineates the former and latter approaches being taken. Because they don't want people playing the old games, since that makes the online experience less popular for the current games, and also increases the length of time they'd be expected to maintain the older servers. That's why the Call of Duty games never go on any decent sale. The opposite is also true: companies aren't going to put older stuff on sale if they feel that it'll hurt the sales of their current offerings. Companies may give deep discounts (or bundle something) if they want that game to serve as an advertisement for a sequel to said game. The other thing to keep in mind is also the impact that sales on the back catalog will have on newer stuff. The folks who really want to play it will generally buy it anyways. There's a few stragglers who will buy it every sale, but more discounts aren't going to move a lot more units, because almost everyone who is remotely interested in the game already has it.Īnd yes, there will very rarely be all that much of an incentive for companies to put old DLC on sale. Deeper discounts only work up to a point, after which you're just cutting into your revenues more than the increased sales make up for. Now, the thing about this is that eventually it stops being an effective strategy. They want to increase their overall revenue and figure that giving occasional discounts prompts enough sales that wouldn't otherwise happen such that it makes up for the money lost due to the discount.
