I am dreading the wave of out-of-date VPN packages that are going to cause issues all over the place on this. Issues with split tunnelling and with leakage from VPNs are going to be an issue. I am still waiting to get my hands on a new M1 MacBook Pro, so I don't haven't been able to verify yet, but what I am hearing is that these changes are going to play merry hell with VPN apps as well.

There's not a great anti-trust argument to be made that a monopoly OS provider would be required to support third-party software firewalls on-device. You're allowed to play favorites with yourself even if you are a monopoly, as long as the "favorites" are core to your product and not muscling into an unrelated market. (Their iPhone business absolutely is, though, and they will get smacked for their behavior there, at least in the EU.) Legally, they can do that crap as long as they are not considered in a market dominant position, which their Mac business absolutely isn't. Instead, Apple decided to do the Apple thing and play favorites with themselves.

Apple could have addressed that issue in any number of ways, from a separate boot sequence to just green-lighting a SINGLE update app - and preferably by adding the proper rule to firewall and not just routing around it. I think this is yet another example where a lack of transparency created a bigger problem: Apple needed to make this clear up front and provide some way for the user to either toggle this setting or at least be informed that certain apps are special.īull.
